Glad You Liked It! Our Top 13 Facebook Posts in 2013

2013 was a busy year at Pecometh! With so much going on, we were curious which updates you all were most interested in this year. Here are the 13 most popular Facebook posts of 2013, based on likes, comments and shares. What was your favorite Pecometh memory this year?

Ms. Sue13. "Ms. Sue" Palmerton

110 post interactions*

On September 13 we featured Sue Palmerton as part of our Lifetime at Pecometh blog series. “Ms. Sue,” as she is known in the Dining Hall, works in the kitchen during summer camp.

Sue can often be found chatting with people about the Orioles and Summer Respite for Adults with Disabilities. She has been a camper for the past 16 years, and it is still the highlight of her summer!

Why you liked it: Generations of staffers have fond memories of Sue as a camper and as kitchen staff. We were curious to hear more about her story!

You might not know: Ms. Sue has been known to scold Executive Director Jack Shitama when he is late bringing his dishes to the window!

Team Pecometh12. Team Pecometh

119 post interactions

Team Pecometh's third annual stint at the Baltimore Running Festival was on October 12 this year. One team of four ran the marathon relay, and the other team of 4 ran the 5k together.

Together they raised over $3,000 for Pecometh's general fund. Contact Jack if you would like to join Team Pecometh for 2014 Baltimore Running Festival.

Why you liked it: The Pecometh community is great at cheering each other on!

You may not know: The Segar family, who ran the 5k together, joined team Pecometh last year. at the time, Sam and Mike were campers and the family saw the invitation and decided to run together! This past summer, Mike joined our summer staff as a part of the maintenance crew. Looks like another family has started "a lifetime at Pecometh."

Summer Staff11. Real World Field Guide

128 post interactions

To help our summer staff combat the "October Blues," we shared this blog post on October 3, offering advice on the transition from camp back to the "real world."

We paired with with a #ThrowbackThursday pic from our 2013 summer staff. If you know of a college-aged person who would like to help campers have life-changing experiences, send them to our summer staff application

Why you liked it: For summer staffers, no matter how long ago we worked on summer staff Pecometh is always "deep down in our hearts." Plus, the picture was pretty hilarious.

You may not know: Many summer staffers experience new pangs of missing camp in October, once the back to school/work busyness has died down. We call this the "October Blues."

Penowlope10. Naming Penowlope

137 post interactions

On February 18, we debuted our new mascot (a plush juvenile barn owl), and asked for name suggestions. Lots of people suggested names, we settled on Penowlope.

Stay tuned for more of Penowlope's adventures!

Why you liked it: People jumped at the change to name our friend Penowlope, plus we know pictures of camp of all kinds.

You may not know: You can find a friend like Penowlope in the Trading Post during the camp season!

Music time9. Music Time

142 post interactions

Music time is a favorite part of the summer camp experience! On July 12 we posted this photo, showing off our recently added LCD projector.

Up until this summer we were still using an overhead projector with transparencies to project the words to camp songs.

Why you liked it: Campers and staff alike love music time! Plus, the addition of the LCD projector was big news.

You may not know: During music time, a service staffer was always assigned to switch the transparencies for each song, and move them up and down to show the right words. The dancing shook the Fellowship Hall so much that if the staffer didn't pay attention, the transparency would bounce right off the overhead projector!

Volunteer Day8. Volunteer Day

142 post interactions

Every April we hold Volunteer Day, a Saturday when church groups are invited to come help us get Pecometh ready for the busy season.

Our photos from this year's Voluteer Day on April 20 were pretty popular!

Why you liked it: Church groups were eager to see pictures of their volunteers, and even tagged themselves and shared some of the pictures. Plus, people seem to like seeing photos of new developments at Pecometh.

You may not know: Because Easter is on the third Sunday in April this year, Volunteer Day is a little early this year - April 12.

Pecometh Sunset7. Sunset

160 post interactions

We posted this photo on October 4. I'm not sure we need to add anything to this!

Why you liked it: Pecometh has the best sunsets, and with an abosolutely still and mirror-like river this one was pretty amazing.

You may not know: This sunset photo almost never happened. I was a little late taking our daily photos of the living shoreline progress, and rushed down to riverside. When I finished up and turned around, this beautiful sunset was right behind me. Who knows how many beautiful sunsets there are that we don't see?

Friends6. Singing in Closing Worship

164 post interactions

This photo of the summer staff singing "Friends" by Michael W. Smith was from closing worship on the last day of staff training week.

Why you liked it: The tradition of ending Closing Worship with "Friends" has been special to staff and campers for decades.

You may not know: Our summer staff come a week before camp starts for Staff Training Week. During this week the staff get to enjoy camp activities, bond and (most importantly) learn how to be great staffers!

Friends and Family5. Friends & Family Camp

165 post interactions

In early July we posted a group photo from our first of two 2013 Friends & Family Camp weekends, and invited folks to join us for the second weekend in August!

The 2014 Friends & Family Camp weekends are June 27-29 and August 1-3. Registration opens in January 2014.

Why you liked it: Our F&F campers had a great time, and many of them shared the photo and invited others to come to a future weekend.

You may not know: Friends & Family Camp was the brainchild of the Camp Pecometh Staff Alumni Association. Summer staff and alumni volunteers work together to provide all of the fun and faith-filled camp experiences that our traditional programs offer.

Outdoor Chapel4. Evening at Riverside

188 post interactions

We were treated to another beautiful sunset on June 17 during Vespers. Once again, what can we say? The sunsets are beautiful!

Why you liked it: The outdoor chapel is a beloved spot experienced by man people in our camp and retreat programs. Many, many God-inspired, life-changing experiences happen here!

You may not know: Vespers is our evening prayer service on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings during summer camp. The centerpiece of Vespers is the skits performed by campers to help review that day's Bible study topic.

2003 Staff3. 2003 Staff Pic TBT

213 post interactions

Some of the people in this photo couldn't believe their summer staff experience was 10 years ago, and for others it seems like a different lifetime.

We posted this #ThrowbackThursday photo on September 19, and it sparked a lot of interest.

Why you liked it: A few helpful staff alumni tagged a bunch of their friends in the photo, and lots of people commented to share their 2003 memories.

You may not know: Our Summer Camp Program Assistant, Ken was in this throwback photo as a fresh-faced young staffer. Sometimes people end up back at Pecometh long after they thought their staff days were over!

Hayride Guides2. Pecometh Day Pics

233 post interactions

When we posted pics of Pecometh Day in April, over 200 of people tuned in to see all the fun we had!

Pecometh Day is our annual day of family fun. The event is free and open to the community - and it's a great chance for potential campers and their parents to see what Pecometh is all about!

Why you liked it: Kids having fun, a moonbounce and inflatable slide, and a petting zoo with chicks and other cute animals? What's not to like? Plus, this most popular photo from the batch got plenty of likes from the campers and staff who know these staff alumni volunteers!

You may not know: Up until a couple of years ago Pecometh Day was a fundraiser as well. These days we save fundraising for other times, and just focus on the family fun. The next Pecometh Day is April 26.

Living Shoreline1. Shoreline Before and After

240 post interactions

After weeks of updates on the living shoreline construction and planting, we posted this before and after photo on November 21.

This living shoreline helps to stabilize our shoreline, protect the Chester River and keep Fellowship Hall safe from further erosion and flooding.

Why you liked it: The Pecometh community was glad to see added protection for Fellowship Hall, and was proud to see the ways we are improving our environmental sustainability. The local community was also glad to see us partnering with local organizationst to make this project happen!

You may not know: This transformation isn't complete! When the plants grow in, most of the sandy area will be covered with marsh grasses, and small shrubs will provide an added barrier against disruption at the top of the structure.
